Sunset in Zadar

Sunset in Zadar

“Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida”

These words were uttered by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964.

Does Zadar have the most beautiful sunsets in the world?  I’ll let you decide!
With music in the background from Zadar’s Sea Organ and the uninterrupted views over the Adriatic Sea, it is definitely a sunset that is hard to beat.

The wide promenade on the ocean side of the town, provides a perfect viewing spot to see the sun set. Beneath the steps at the end of the Riva, is the famous art installation by Nikola Bašić called the Sea Organ. You can’t actually see it but underneath the steps are a series of musically tuned pipes and blow holes that create music when air is forced through these by the waves.

There’s a little bar in the park opposite that is the perfect spot to watch the world go by before the day is finished!

Slowly the sun sinks…

And on another day…a completely different sunset!

As daylight diminishes, the lights from Zadar’s other art installation from Nikola Bašić, the Greeting to the Sun, start to brighten. This installation is like a giant disco floor. The energy stored by the cells in the glass floor during the day now produces a changing wave of colours.

Maybe Alfred Hitchcock was right when he said that “Zadar has the most beautiful sunsets in the world”

Do you agree with him? Where have you seen your best sunset?

How I wish that I find the time to travel to some of the places you have visited. I’ll be back to view older posts.

My travels have been over quite a few years Denise! Thank you for supporting me through this challenge and for your comments. I have really appreciated it.

Just love the sea organ and the riva (promenade) – such a beautiful public space. We held a poetry reading there, fantastic ‘venue’. :)
    (this is my hometown, btw.)

I’d forgotten that this is your home town Ana….and a beautiful town it is! It’s a fabulous space. It was very clever to put the installations at the end of the Riva.

They are certainly very beautiful. My favourite is the picture with the ship. I’d have to travel the entire world to decide if they were the best sunsets though! The best I remember was in Borneo – there was a spit of land where everyone gathered much as it is above.

Well done all of us for making it to the end!

Great idea Anabel…let’s all travel the world in search of the best sunset!

We just went to Zadar, and I wanted to stay for the sunset, but we didn’t have time…had to catch a plane.

Jenny, Congrats on making through the A-Z Challenge, I’ve loved reading your posts.

    • Jenny Freedman May 1, 2014 at 10:26 pm #

Next time you’ll have to stay for the sunset Corinne! Thanks for the congratulations. It was quite an achievement for all of us!

Nice to end with a sunset!

You know how I feel about Croatia and this just makes me want to go even more.

Congrats on finishing!!! I hope to see you in Greece in a few months.

It’s just nice to finish isn’t it Ann! I may have to drag you there myself before we meet in Athens

Congrats on completing the challenge – and with such a wonderful post! Those sunsets looks incredible but to really judge I think I’ll have to see it in person :)

    • Jenny Freedman May 1, 2014 at 10:16 pm #

Thanks Calli. I think you’ll have to go too…you’d love it!

Everything I see and read about Croatia makes me want to visit. I am afraid that I will have impossibly high expectations by the time we get there.

In the 70′s we stayed in Bali for a month. In those days we didn’t develop our photos until we came home. When we arrived in Perth and developed our photos, they were nearly all sunsets. :)

I don’t think anywhere in the world can claim the best sunset – they are all so different and so wonderful. Sunsets make me glad to be alive. :)

You’ll still be blown away by Croatia Jan…High expectations or not! I agree with you inm regards to the sunsets…there are so many beautiful ones. I don’t want to stop seeing them either!

    Hi Jenny,

it looks glorious in your photos – and I trust your judgement on that more than Hitchcock’s – I bet you’re more well traveled than him ;)

    • Jenny Freedman May 11, 2014 at 10:03 pm #

Thanks for the vote of confidence Annabel. Zadar has fabulous sunsets but I must admit so do a lot of other places!

Great photos, Jenny. Croatia is high on my wish list. This year I’ll be getting closer when I visit Slovenia but unfortunately Croatia will have to wait until another trip for me. You’ve tempted me now to add Zadar to the list of Croatian cities and town I must visit – along with Dubrovnik, Split, Korcula …..

Hello Jenny. I didn’t participate in the A-Z this year, but I visited many bloggers who did. I saw your name on Deniz Bevan’s blog and as I am a travel junkie I decided to visit. I adore your photos and have pinned some of them. Thank you! I try to travel overseas every year and have thousands of gorgeous photos. There’s the problem of having enough time to categorise them…

    Will be back!

    Denise

Hi Denise. Thank you for your lovely comment. I can definitely relate to you problem with the lack of time to categorise photos. I have the same problem! A to Z was fun but it’s taken me a while to get back to blogging since then!
