Perched high in the hills behind Sciacca, Caltabellotta can be seen for miles.

The drive there is beautiful with spring flowers covering the fields.

As we climb higher and higher, the road becomes a series of never ending bends.
The hill top towns provide their own challenge. We have learnt not to trust our tomtom who likes to take shortcuts, but to follow the signs to the centre of the village. Shortcuts are not advised in Caltabellotta!

We have come here for lunch at M.A.T.E.S
No, not Mates Restaurant but the Museo delle Antiche Traditizioni Enogastranomiche Siciliane.
A family restaurant with Mamma in the kitchen and the sons running the front of house. When we were there, Papa made an appearance to check the day’s takings.

Look for the sign at the intersection of Via Triocola and Via San Thommaso. Walk up the hill, keeping left. You will see a small flight of steps on your right which leads you to the restaurant.
