Have you seen a quokka?
Unless you have visited Rottnest Island, the answer is probably no for this little fella is mainly found on this island off the coast of Western Australia about 12kms from Fremantle.
The quokka is a small marsupial that resembles a wallaby. It carries its young in its pouch as does the kangaroo, feeds at night on leaves and grasses and can survive without water for quite a while. Interestingly I have just learnt that they can climb trees though I have never seen this.
Around the Rottnest settlement area, they are quite friendly and often come up to you in search of food. Feeding them is not encouraged as it can upset their diet and cause illness.
Just in case you are tempted to pick one up, fines are given for handling these little creatures!
I’ve never even heard of a quokka! It also reminds me of a koala, which looks so cute and cuddly, but I’m told is not cuddly at all. Thanks for this new info.
Koalas are a lot more cuddly than quokkas Karene. These guys may be cute to look at but they can be a pest sometimes ..always on search of food! We used to have barbecues on the beach at Rottnest and within minutes they would appear and start rummaging through baskets and trying to grab the food!
